The staircase consists of four flights and three landings and is oriented from west to east towards the city center and towards the church of Santa Maria Nascente. On top of the staircase there is a vintage cannon, two mortars, a niche inscribed with the names of the fallen. Above the portals of the crypt is the inscription: "To those who were, for those who are, for those who will."
