The Tracciolino Novate Mezzola

Located above the Mezzola Lake, The “Tracciolino” is a small piece of art that has no equal in the Alps, whose construction dates back to the thirties. Bridges and tubbels in the mountains, often bravely constructed on overhanging rocks, to allow small wagons to bring men and materials from the dam in Val dei Ratti to the outlet in Val Codera

ABOUT the “TRACCIOLINO”.

The Tracciolino is a popular destination for both trekkers and mountain bikers, a route characterised by tunnels dug into the rock and a decauville, the famous railway line for the transportation of goods. The route was opened in the 1930 as a service line for the transport of merchaindise and as a link between two dams, one in Val Codera and the other in Valle dei Ratti

The Tracciolino route has a total lenght of approximately 14 km. but at the moment only 9 of these have been rendered safe and can also be travelled by mountain bike.

TRACCIOLINO ITINERARY IN MOUNTAIN BIKE

The imposing walls of rock in Bassa Valchiavenna hide one of the most famous and well-know trails among mountain bike entusiast. A stunning trail, dug of the rock, it overhangs the Novate Mezzola Lake, allowing for incomparable views, with 22 tunnels to pass trough before reaching Codera, a characteristic mountain hamlet reached only by tracks from the valley. This itinerary is usually praticable from March to November.

No particular skills required, aphart from being able to complete the descent along the trails from San Giorgio, Cola and Casten that lead down to the valley. The tour starts from the town of Verceia, take the road towards Valle dei Ratti, wich is unpaved towards the end, leading to the hamlet of Casten. Push for a short distance before coming the Tracciolino.
